FAQs

FAQs

Below is a list of frequently asked questions pertaining to hospital beds.

Does Medicare pay for Hospital Beds?

Yes they do, with a doctor’s prescription and significant documentation from the prescribing physician, hospital, or rehab center. Getting this all to the supplier is the most difficult task.

Does Medicare buy me the bed or do they rent it?

Medicare rents the bed for you, they do not purchase beds. It is a 13 month capped rental. They will pay the supplier a rental fee for the bed, mattress, and rails for up to 13 months. At the end of the 13th month, ownership is transferred to the patient.

If the hospital bed from Medicare is a rental, does that mean it is used?

In most circumstances, hospital bed rentals from Medicare are used. This may also include the mattress (hopefully it is properly sanitized). Occasionally, if the supplier is out of their used rental beds, you may end up with a new one.

Can I get a fully electric Hospital bed from Medicare?

The bed Medicare will rent for you is a semi-electric hospital bed. This means that the head section is motorized, and under the knees is motorized. They can be controlled with a remote control.  The elevation of a semi-electric bed does however have to be manually cranked every time you have to change the height of the bed. This can be inconvenient for the caregiver.

What type of mattress do I get with a Medicare Hospital Bed?

Typically the mattress you receive from a Medicare supplier is a basic innerspring or economy foam mattress. In some instances you may qualify for a gel mattress overlay or a pressure prevention mattress. In situations where the patient has multiple Stage 2 ulcers or a Stage 3 ulcer on their trunk or torso, the patient may be eligible for a low air loss mattress replacement.
